# How a Browser Works: A Beginner-Friendly Guide to Browser Internals

In this blog, we’ll break down **how a browser works**, step by step, in a simple way.

### What a browser actually is (beyond “it opens websites”)

It is not just a website owner.

A browser is a **complex software system, sort of an operating system** that:

* Fetches data from servers
    
* Understands HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
    
* Calculates layouts
    
* Paints pixels on your screen
    

Chrome, Firefox, Safari — they all do the same job, just with different engines inside.

### Main Parts of Browser

* User Interface
    
* Browser Engine
    
* Rendering Engine
    
* Networking
    
* Javascript Engine
    

Don’t memorize it; we will eventually understand it as we move on.

### User Interface

This is the visible part of the browser:

* Address bar
    
* Tabs
    
* Back / Forward buttons
    
* Refresh button
    
* Bookmarks
    

The UI itself **does not render websites** — it only lets you interact with the browser.

### Browser Engine

* It acts as the bridge between the UI and the rendering engine.
    
* Tell the rendering engine what to load and when
    

### Rendering Engine

* Does the **actual work of transforming code into pixels**
    
* Understands HTML and CSS
    
* Builds structures and paints content
    

Examples:

* Chromium browsers → Blink
    
* Firefox → Gecko
    
* Safari → WebKit
    

Just remember, **<mark>rendering engine = website visuals</mark>**<mark>.</mark>

### Networking

Once you enter the URL in the browser.

It will check the DNS cache. If it is not there, then it will do a DNS lookup to get the IP address.

After getting the IP, it will send an HTTP request to the server and get the HTML, CSS, JS and images.

At this point browser has all the raw files, but not the website.

### Javascript Engine

It is a computer program that directly executes JavaScript code by converting it into machine-readable instructions.

### HTML Parsing and DOM Creation

Now the real work starts.

The browser reads HTML line by line and converts it into a structure called the DOM.

### What is the DOM?

DOM = Document Object Model

Think of it like a tree structure:

* `<html>` is the root
    
* `<body>` is a branch
    
* `<div>`, `<p>`, `<h1>` are child nodes
    

## CSS Parsing and CSSOM Creation

CSS is processed separately.

The browser:

1. Reads CSS files
    
2. Parses rules
    
3. Builds another tree-like structure called **CSSOM**
    

### CSSOM = CSS Object Model

Now the browser combines:

* **DOM (structure)**
    
* **CSSOM (styles)**
    

This creates the **<mark>Render Tree</mark>**.

### Next step: **Reflow**.

Here, the browser calculates:

* Element sizes
    
* Positions
    
* Spacing
    

### Painting

Here, the browser starts filling color into the elements, draw border if any,

Places images, renders text.

Finally, you see the website! 🎉

> You don’t need to memorize all of this. Just remember that when you open a website, the browser follows a **pipeline of steps** to turn code into visible content on the screen.
